Agriculture: Getting into a Frame

Our today’s civilization is a product of agriculture. Agriculture involves the domestication of plants. Women are the pioneer of the development of agriculture. Agriculture can be of three types: crop cultivation, livestock production and fishery. The production of rice takes a large domain of agriculture as it is the dominant food crop of Bangladesh. About 75% of agricultural lands are used for the production of rice. From the great famine of 1770 and Bengal famine, which lead to the death of near about 2-4 million people and occurred because of a diseases of paddy- it is easily understood that people’s life is largely dependent on agriculture mostly on the production of rice as it is our staple food.

The rice of this sub-continent has its great history. In the reign of Sen and Pal dynasty Bangla was rich in rice production. Chinese traveler Fa Xian, told about many crops of this sub-continent in his books. From the writings of Ibn Battuta and Khona’s saying, many references of various kinds of rice are found. In Mughal period, 320 kg rice was sold by taka only one. All of this old sayings talks about the availability of rice in this sub continent.

In an organized way, Indigo revolt is a sign of more established agriculture of this country. In 1820, for the development of agriculture, William Carry established a Horticulture Farm. And in 1864-1868, Lord Warren Hestings made the first famine commission to research about the previous famines occurred in this reign and he also brought the agriculture of this area under a good management system. As in every 4 to 5 years, flood had made severe loses in agriculture, Lord Karjon passed a bill to establish department of agriculture and in 1914, 20 acre land was given to research and extend the department. In 1923, proposals were given to establish agriculture institute in Bangla.

And when Sher e Bangla A. K. Fajlul Haque comes in power of political position, he founded Bengal agriculture institute which is run under the Govt. It is divided into 4 sectors to manage the works of each section in more organized way. The 4 sections are of research, training, extension and teaching. There are 4 universities and some institutions under the research sector. The training section arranges various training and seminar on farming for the farmers. There are 17 training institutes under this sector. Department of agriculture extension works for spreading the message and information to the root level. They keep monitoring to ensure that the farmers get the right price for their products. And they also supplies seeds at fair price. As a discipline of teaching, agriculture department is been introduced to many universities as a subject to study and research for the development of agriculture. Govt. tries her best for the development of agriculture.
